Based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, the duo is known for their intimate and intense performances. Winner of Montreux Jazz Competition presided by Quincy Jones,Sanem Kalfa sings original compositions and arrangements in four different languages – her mother tongue (Turkish), Portuguese, Italian and English. The dialog is portrayed together with poly-instrumentalist and composer George Dumitriu, active in the jazz, contemporary classical and improvised music scenes of Europe. The duo is exploring vast soundscapes with sincerity, emotional strength, innocence and humour. A touch of electronics, loops and effects is the cherry on top of their voice-guitar-viola act.
Sanem Kalfa developed her own style by enriching jazz with colorful Turkish tradition.
This style is brought to the audience when listening the way Sanem approaches arrangements of jazz standards and her own jazz interpretations. Her distinctive interpretations include the ones which evoke strong emotion through traditional Turkish and jazz pieces including her own compositions.
