Mixing electronica with jazz has been a fundamental part of the modern jazz scene for years now, but Brighton’s Ebi Soda have a whole new perspective on it. They’re a quintet that largely rides on non-electronic instrumentation – the main members play trombone, keys, bass, guitar, and drums – but their sound is so indebted to the psychedelic sounds of 90s and 2000s electronic music that you could easily throw them in the same pile without a second thought. Their influences range from early 70s CAN to drum ‘n’ bass to modern fusion heavyweights BADBADNOTGOOD, and it all mixes for one kaleidoscopic sound that genuinely feels like it’s treading new ground for jazz music as a whole.
